Mr. Hughes' class recently released baby praying mantises into the Learning Garden. The Mariposa 4-H Youth Development Program provided the class with an ootheca (egg sack) which took approximately two and a half months to hatch. Now the praying mantises will be able to fulfill their role as pest control — they will feast on the aphids and fruit flies that are detrimental to the learning garden crops. The class discussed the mantises' contribution to the ecosystem before taking a moment to bid them a ‘fair adieu’.
