Students love it when Wayne "Coach" Kelly is in town from his home in Moss Landing and comes to school to sub on occasion for teachers. They also love it when he comes into the classroom and teaches his unit on sharks. He did this recently for both the third and fourth grade classroom and the seventh and eighth grade classroom. He used the classrooms' document cameras to display images of different sharks and fossils of sharks. With the younger students, Coach Kelly showed video footage of his time out at sea and his own encounters with sharks, including tagging them for tracking purposes. Students are always amazed at the large variety of sharks there are and at the variety of behavior they exhibit. Students especially love when Coach Kelly takes out his special fishing gear, harness, and skate board and gives them turns feeling what it is like being a shark and what it is like being a fisherman trying to pull a shark in so that they can tag them. Students came to realize that pulling a shark in with a fishing rod is not an easy task. Coach Kelly’s presentation was an exciting learning experience for all.
